Microbial Biofilm

Microbes form biofilms in order to adapt to the living environment during their growth. The biofilm is a complex microbial community, which refers to an organized bacteria population attached to the surface of living or inanimate objects and wrapped by bacterial extracellular macromolecules. The formation of biofilm is generally divided into four stages, namely initial adhesion, biofilm maturation, biofilm dispersal and cellular detachment. Biofilms exist in wounds and can be found in many other situations, such as stones at the bottom of streams, shower floors, sewers, etc. Dental plaque is also a common biofilm, which can lead to dental caries and gum disease.

Microbial biofilms are closely related to the formation of microbial resistance, gene transfer and persistent infections. At present, the research focus on biofilms has gone deep into the signal transmission between microbes, the transfer of pathogenic genes, and how to interfere with the formation of biofilms. In addition, biofilm technology has been applied in sewage treatment and environmental protection engineering, biomaterial engineering and food industry.
