Thiodendron Cultivation

The cells of Thiodendron are arc-shaped, with spiral coils and slightly tapered ends. Thiodendron has thin filaments ("stalks", 0.15--0.25 microns) that are approximately 10-15 times as long as they are wide, either at one end of the cell, or at both ends of the cell. The filaments are straight and more or less curved, often of considerable length and occasionally exhibiting bifurcation. They are arranged radially to a common center. The arc-shaped cells of Thiodendron can carry out flagellar movement.

Colonies of Thiodendron are concentrically layered, subglobose, grayish to bluish-white, with alternating lighter and darker rings. It is speculated that this layering phenomenon reflects the precipitation of colloidal sulfur due to H2S oxidation. In natural sulfur spring water, colonies grow to a size of 4 cm within 3-4 days.

Thiodendron is presumably aerobic to microaerobic bacteria. The bacterial growth requires a pure culture of sulfur in the form of H2S.

Thiodendron was first isolated from natural sulfur hot springs near Chokraskoye, Russia. It has also been observed in peat mud, sand, or various freshwater samples.

Thiodendron Culture Service

Creative Biogene offers customizable Thiodendron strain culture services. This service can help you obtain Thiodendron cultures for subsequent scientific research. This service allows you to skip the complicated and tedious groping of culture conditions, which helps to speed up research on this strain.

Thiodendron latens

Thiodendron latens is the type species of Thiodendron. Its characteristics are the same as those described by Thiodendron.
