All organisms can be traced back to a common ancestor. The generation and differentiation of organisms grow and branch-like trees, so the evolutionary relationship between organisms can be expressed in the form of trees. The phylogenetic tree is a tree diagram showing the evolutionary relationships between species that are considered to have a common ancestor.

The ancestor is on the "trunk" of the tree, and organisms that have arisen from it are placed at the end of the "branch" of the tree. Methods for constructing phylogenetic trees include,

  • Maximum parsimony (MP) - applicable to sequences with very high similarity.
  • Distance method - applicable to sequences with high similarity.
  • Maximum likelihood (ML) - applicable to any related sequence set.
