UniFrac Analysis

UniFrac analysis uses the evolutionary information between each sample sequence to compare whether environmental samples have significant differences in microbial communities in a specific evolutionary lineage. UniFrac can be applied to the evaluation and analysis of beta diversity, that is, the UniFrac distance matrix between samples can be obtained by comparing the two samples. UniFrac is a distance metric applied to compare biological communities. It incorporates the phylogenetic distance between observed organisms in the calculation to incorporate information about the relative relevance of community members.

UniFrac only considers whether the sequence appears in the community, not the abundance of the sequence. If two communities contain the same species, then regardless of whether there is a difference in abundance of each species or the magnitude of the difference, the UniFrac value is 0. The weighted UniFrac method is based on UniFrac, taking into account the abundance of the sequence, and it can distinguish the difference in species abundance. Unweighted UniFrac can detect the presence of variation among samples, while weighted UniFrac can further quantify the variation that occurs on different lineages.

Tool Used
