CARD Analysis

With the discovery and use of antibiotics, more and more resistant strains have emerged. Drug resistance will increase the difficulty and cost of disease treatment. CARD (the Comprehensive Antibiotic Research Database) is a resistance gene database released by Canadian biotech personnel in 2013. It contains all the resistance information in the ARDB database. The core of the CARD database is ARO (Antibiotic Resistance Ontology), which is a term constructed by the database to associate antibiotic modules and their targets, resistance mechanisms, gene mutations and other information. At present, CARD annotation is widely used for microbial gene annotation analysis, especially in the prediction of metagenomic sequencing results.

The resistance gene prediction analysis can be achieved by choosing BLAST and RGI (Resistance Gene Identifier) modes,

  • BLAST relies on the BLAST software in NCBI to align the sequence with the CARD reference sequence to obtain relevant annotation information.
  • RGI is the software developed by the CARD database team to predict the sequence of resistance genes based on proteins, that is, to predict the sequence of resistance genes through protein homology and protein variation.
