Network science based on Graph theory believes that the relationships between any discontinuous things can be represented by the network. By abstracting entities with different attributes such as computers, individuals in social relationships, and biological genes as nodes, and using links to show the relationship between entities. Then by quantifying the network structure index with nodes and connections as components, it is possible to find the commonalities of complex systems under a unified framework.

Network analysis has recently appeared frequently in various papers on microbial ecology research. In fact, simply looking at network relationships is just a means of data analysis, which has been applied to many fields very early. However, it was not until 2006 that Newman proposed that network relationships can also be used as an analysis method in the ecological field. By 2012, Barberán was studying the symbiosis model of microbes in the soil by constructing a network.

The network diagram can visually show the abundance of species between different samples or groups. The width of node connections represents the number of sampling sites, and the area of each node is proportional to the abundance of cluster. Node colors and labels accordingly specify the phylogenetic and taxonomic affiliation of the clusters.
